My friend Russ defines the "perfect photo" as one that needs no adjustments after you snap the shutter. I disagree. Whether you're using film or digital, a point-and-shoot or the fanciest DSLR, the process of taking a photgraph means using a mechanical device to capture reflected and refracted light. There are bound to be some distortions in how that light is captured.
Refining your photo in post-processing takes the captured image and adjusts it so it looks like you remember the scene when you were there. Sometimes it might be as simple as a little sharpening and boosting the contrast. In other instances, you may adjust the levels or alter the color saturation.
One thing I often have to do is remove the imperfections caused by dust or other debris on my filter, lens, or sensor.
