More than a few times, I've extended my tripod legs, and had the snow try pulling them farther apart when I set the tripod in deep snow.

To overcome this, you can either stomp down the snow in the areas where your tripod feet will rest, or open your tripod about halfway, and let the snow widen it the rest of the way as you set it down.
